Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance.

Pet insurance will help with any unexpected vet bills if your family pet gets injured or is unwell. It is also possible to have a plan that pays out when your pet dies and if it's lost or stolen. Kidnapping or “Dog-napping” is far more common place than you might think. This is certainly the case for some of the more expensive breeds.

As veterinary medical science improves so do the costs of the newly discovers surgical techniques. Some of the drugs that are used nowadays are also very expensive.

As the loving owner you will always want the best possible care for your pets.

The original reason for the policy (back at the end of the 19th century) was in fact to protect horses, cows and sheep as they were so valuable. Even though people take them out now for horses and ponies the vast majority are for the family dog or cat.

Most policies pay all of the vets fees but it is worth double checking as some only pay a percentage and there may also be an “excess” to pay like you would have with car insurance.

It is possible to have plans that will allow for the cost of “preventative” treatment in the form of vaccinations.

There are two main types of policy, “lifetime” and “non-lifetime”.

The non-lifetime has to be renewed each year so be aware that claims made through the year may well be excluded the following year.

The lifetime one has the advantage here obviously but again check the policy conditions as there are limits per condition.

A few pet insurance plans offer “third-party liability insurance” so if your dog were to run out into the road and cause an accident it can cover the costs that you would otherwise be liable for.
